So Much for Basketball

Al, Joshua, and I left for the basketball tourney in a bus a little less than two hours ago. Not more than ten minutes ago, we arrived back in Vladimir in a car. Confused? Let me explain.

About an hour into our trip, Al received a call from the pastor in Alexandrov informing us that the tournament would be cancelled. The court that they were going to use is outdoors and the weather today is cold, windy, and rainy. Al and I talked about what we should do and we decided to "jump ship" as soon as the bus came to the next village. At the time of the call, we were out in the middle of a bunch of farm land. Once we got off the bus, we started asking different people with cars if they were going to Vladimir. Failing to find any takers, we decided to stand on the side of the road and try and flag someone down. We praise the Lord that the second car that came by was on the way to Vladimir and willing to take us for only the price of gasoline. He was a nice older gentleman who happened to drive very quickly. I think he made the return trip in about half the time that it took the bus to get to wherever we were.

We're a bit bummed that we didn't get to play basketball and share the gospel at the event, but we are confident that God is sovereign and continuing to accomplish His purposes. Olya was excited to hear that I was coming back. We are heading over to Al's tonight for pizza. It wasn't what we expected, but it will do.

One of these days we hope to have a basketball outreach somewhere. Next time, we should try to secure an indoor court!
